So, as much as I love my cracked-out owls, and believe you me I do, I’m starting to feel that itchy stylesheet feeling where it’s time to change the wallpaper – and a lot else – about this site. And by “change” I mean “see what I can do myself” and also “rope various friends in for bribes and pennies”. If I’m going to yank up these bootstraps I need some assvice. Are there any blogs that you think are beautifully or excellently designed? What makes it good? What’s cool these days? What platforms/upgrades should I be looking into? Do you have strong opinions about blog design that you’re just dying to dump on my head?
Barely functional comment section is taking all comers.

I’m delurking to say that I really like the green background. I got nothing in the way of advice (I had a friend put my blog together for me) but since I have to come to the page to read your entries, rather than reading them in Google Reader, I appreciate the colour. There are some nasty colour schemes out there (pink and orange stripes comes to mind).
You could take a look at http://www.designshack.com and go into their blog section if you want some inspiration. There are a lot of different types and styles of blogs out there that work really well. I think it is just a matter of finding what style you like and working with that. Cracked-out owls can work just as well. I write a lot of blog design articles that I think you might be interested in though.
Hi Krisa! It’s Dani from Sydney, delurking to say that design-wise, your blog’s always looked fabulous, from the pink and white striped lucky tulips scheme to the old “cherchez la femme” header. They have a personality that’s about as far away from the stock-standard blue-and-white template as you can get. It’s great. As far as gadgets go, I don’t know, maybe that nifty flickr app that puts your photos on your blog? Looking forward to seeing the new look!
Contemplate a migration to WordPress. MovableType is *so* 2003.
Glad to hear people still like the green and the cracked-out owls; I’m not thinking of totally getting rid of the whimsy and the funkiness, just maybe make a few changes for freshness! Plus my back pages haven’t worked very well for, and this is embarrassing, years.
I have to second WordPress. I used Blogger for quite a while and it’s utter horse crap compared to WordPress. They offer a lot of functionality, and they also have wonderful forums in which to get inspiration and guidance. You can check out my blog (above) for an example of a free account and all the little widgets you get without paying a cent. Of course, upgrading means access to even more fun goodies.
I love the owls, too! Here’s hoping they get a proper burial if and when the time comes…
Wow! It’s about time, I’m sooooo over the owls!
